How to Know When it’s Time to Replace Your Windows

0

There’s no question about the fact that windows are an essential part of your home. When purchasing a different house, it’s one of the first things that potential buyers look at. The age of the windows can help in determining how long they are going to last before they are going to need a replacement. However, if you don’t know the age of the windows, how are you supposed to know when it’s time to take them out and put new ones in?

Several factors should be taken into consideration when checking windows to see if their life expectancy has expired. It can be a major expense, so you don’t want to do it prematurely and waste your money. You don’t want to wait too long either, because it can cost you money in energy costs with heating and cooling. Know what to look for so you can tell when it’s the right time to give your windows an upgrade.

Your Energy Bills Have Gone Up

For the most part, besides with the changes of the seasons, your energy bills should remain reasonably consistent. You know how much your electric and gas bill are going to be each month before they even come. Maybe not the exact amount, but you can ballpark it. If there is sudden and unexplained spike in the cost, there’s a good chance that your windows are no longer working effectively.

To help reduce your energy bills, your windows should help in keeping cold and hot air out as well as keep the air conditioning or furnace air in. When they leak, your appliances are going to have to work harder to keep the temperature regulated where you want it to be. As a result, your bills go up. When you see a spike in energy costs, you should be inspecting your windows. It could be time to plan on replacing them.

You Can Visually See Damage

A severe storm, a stray baseball, or age alone can cause damage to your windows. If you can see cracks, chips, or breaks in the glass or frame, you can first investigate to see if can simply be repaired. A repair is going to be a lot more affordable and quicker than a complete replacement. However, in some instances, a repair isn’t going to be adequate to fix the problem. You may have to order a new one.

The Windows Aren’t Working Properly

Every window in your home should operate smoothly. You should be able to effortlessly open and shut it, and whatever position you want it in, it should stay there. If you have to force a window up and down or prop it up with an instrument, it’s not an effective window any longer. Getting estimates on new ones should be put on the to-do list right away.

Another somewhat more apparent purpose of the window is to keep precipitation out. If there is water coming in around your frame from the outside, they aren’t working correctly. It can cause significant damage to the structure of your home if water isn’t staying outdoors where it belongs.

Condensation Builds Up

There are seals in double-paned windows that are there to keep moisture out from between the two pieces of glass. When the seals fail, then condensation can build up. If you see water on your windows, first check and see if it is on one of the outside surfaces. If it is, you don’t have anything to worry about. However, if it’s on the inside between the two panes, then the seals aren’t working. When they aren’t doing their job, neither are your windows. You should replace them at the first sign of this because the problem is only going to get worse.

It’s Time for a Renovation

Another good indicator that it’s time to replace your windows is just because you want to. You could be ready to give your home a new look, and different windows can drastically change the appearance believe it or not. There are a plethora of styles out there so you can customize the look to suit your personal preference.

If you are thinking of selling your home, replacing the windows is going to give it great curb appeal. People are going to be willing to pay closer to your asking price if they know they aren’t going to have to replace the windows right away. If you aren’t selling and you want to increase the value for yourself, windows are a nice investment.

It’s Too Noisy

When it seems like you can hear what’s going on outside without even opening your window, then they aren’t soundproof enough for your needs. It could be because the windows are old and not necessarily built for that purpose. While searching for different types of windows for your home, energy-efficient windows have a much better capability of keeping the outside noise outside so that you can enjoy the peace and quiet inside.
