The History of Solar Energy

The sun is a resource for solar energy that has been worshiped by humanity over thousands of years. Solar panels are a modern way that we harness the energy of the sun and capture a renewable energy source from the sunlight that beams down on our homes every day. Solar energy has been around for many centuries but the modern PV solar cell is an item that is helping us to save the environment. Here is how we evolved to find this technology:

The earliest use of solar energy came with magnifying glasses and optics technology for starting fires, lighting torches, heating water, and more. It took centuries of development to harness the power of solar energy and convert it into electricity. The sun can easily power businesses, houses, and more with a stable form of energy using efficient solar panels.

The first solar panels were constructed in the year 1839 with a French physicist named Edmund Becquerel. He created a small cell of metal electrodes to demonstrate the photovoltaic effect when exposing the electrodes to sunlight. Other scientists including Willoughby Smith discovered that selenium could be used as a conductor and in 1883 the first solar cells produced using selenium were showcased. It wasn’t until 1954 that the first silicon solar cells were created. Since that time we have continued to evolve solar cells eventually producing the modern PV cell.

The solar energy industry is expanding rapidly. We’ve come a long way since Einstein first shaped research and discovery around solar technology in 1905. solar energy was employed early on in 1964 when satellites equipped with solar panels were launched for extended use. And in the 1970s solar panels became affordable and available on items like railroad crossings, lighthouses, offshore oil rigs, and more. Solar energy is more affordable and efficient today than ever before. In the 1970s it cost around $20 per watt for solar energy whereas today the average cost is roughly $.50 per watt.

We’ve comes at a long way with solar power it will be extremely interesting to see how efficiency improvements and greater cost reductions will change the rapid adoption of this renewable energy source. This post was written by Daniel Massaad, owner and expert solar technician at Energy Solutions Direct!
